Rainsticks have a long tradition in northern Chile, where they have been associated with ceremonies intended to encourage rainfall. Traditional construction makes ingenious use of the cactus itself. After the Copado cactus has naturally dried, its thorns are inserted into the hollow interior in a spiral arrangement. Pebbles placed inside tumble across these thorns as the instrument is turned, producing its characteristic rain-like sound.
