Away in a Manger (Duet/2-Voice)

Away in a Manger Duet for Two Voices with Piano
Arranged by Michelle Willis

This unique duet arrangement mixes two familiar tunes of this favorite Christmas carol. Piece can be performed by two single voices, or by splitting a large choir (ex. women and men or sopranos/tenors and altos/bass). The piece begins with William J Kirkpatrick's beloved melody with the second verse the alternate anonymous melody. For the third verse, both melodies combine together in a surprisingly natural way. The piano accompaniment throughout is written to be reminiscent of a guitar strumming. This piece includes an optional clarinet solo. Suitable selection for school or church choirs including LDS ward or stake choir Christmas programs.

Lyrics: Charles H. Gabriel

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the heavens looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes;
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.
