Main restrictions: video recordings are for cast/crew/families only, can't be sold and can't be broadcast in any way including on the Internet.

The remaining shows do not allow videotaping. Parents cannot tape, even just for their own personal in-home use. It has nothing to do with how the tape would be used, not being sold, etc. It all comes down to legal copyright rights. Here is how Music Theatre International explains it:

Unfortunately, the rights to videotape are not available. Copyright law gives authors the exclusive right to control the reproduction of their work. When a license is granted for a live stage production of a show, that license does not include the right to tape it because the authors retain the sole right to decide when or if their work is recorded in any way. Even a videotape made for classroom use, as a personal memento or as an archival school record violates the authors' separate right to reproduce their work. In most cases, the authors have already granted such rights exclusively to film or television companies, in which case videotaping this show would also be infringing upon the rights granted by the authors to a third party.

CAN I POST A VIDEO OF OUR PERFORMANCE ON YOUTUBE?
There is no broadcasting of the show in any way, even if you've signed a video license. The license specifically restricts the right to broadcast your performance on YouTube, any school channel, etc.

I HAVE A FEW STUDENTS WHO WERE IN THE 9TH GRADE LAST YEAR AND ARE GOING INTO THE 10TH GRADE. CAN I STILL ALLOW THEM TO PERFORM IN THE SHOW?
No. All performers are required to be in the 9th grade or under when the show is performed.

CAN I PERFORM ONLY CERTAIN MUSICAL NUMBERS FROM THE SHOW?
No. The show must be performed exactly as it has been provided to you in the ShowKit materials and you cannot delete, alter or make changes of any kind in the text of the play, the musical numbers, characters or characterizations.

Overview / Synopsis

Disney’s Newsies JR. brings the high-energy story of Jack Kelly and the newsboys of New York City to the school stage in a 60-minute Broadway Junior adaptation. Based on the 1992 Disney film and the 2012 Broadway musical, Newsies JR. features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein.

Inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899, the story follows Jack Kelly, a charismatic young newsie who rallies his fellow newspaper sellers when powerful publishers raise distribution prices at the boys’ expense. As the newsies organize and fight for fair treatment, they discover the power of courage, loyalty, friendship, and standing together for what is right.

With memorable songs like Carrying the Banner, Seize the Day, and Santa Fe, Newsies JR. is a strong choice for schools looking for an inspiring musical with bold characters, athletic movement, meaningful themes, and excellent ensemble opportunities.

Why teachers choose Newsies JR.: This Broadway Junior musical offers a powerful story, strong featured roles, exciting ensemble staging, and themes of teamwork and justice that connect well with middle school performers.

Director Notes for Disney's Newsies Jr

Newsies Jr is an excellent choice for schools with strong male performers, energetic ensemble participation, and students excited about choreography-heavy productions. While the full Broadway version is dance-intensive, the Junior adaptation remains flexible enough for many middle school programs.

The production succeeds best when schools focus on storytelling momentum, newspaper strike energy, and ensemble commitment rather than perfect dance precision.
